What this usually is
On this class of refrigerator a control complaint splits cleanly in two: a panel that is blank or unresponsive, which is usually supply or connector, and a panel that is alive and complaining, which is usually a sensor. Which of the two you have decides everything that follows. Nothing below asks you to open anything that should stay closed.
The observables
- The display is blank but the cabinet is still cooling — Power reaches the compressor and not the panel, which points at the panel supply or its connector rather than at the board. This is the cheapest information available on the machine.
- Buttons that do nothing or respond to the wrong press — A panel that mis-registers presses is usually the panel, not the board behind it.
- The panel resets itself or flickers — That is a supply or connector fault: a board browning out and restarting rather than a logic failure. A result here decides whether the next two checks are worth doing at all.
- NEAR MISS: the display is fine and the cabinet is warm — A healthy panel above warm food points away from the controls entirely. Time it roughly, as the pattern matters more than the exact interval.
Causes, most likely first
- A temperature sensor out of range or open circuit — First because it is the commonest real fault behind a code: a thermistor is a tiny part in a cold, damp place, and when its reading drifts the board reports it honestly.
- A latched fault state the board will not leave on its own — Worth doing before anything else precisely because it is free and it resolves a real share of cases. Where two causes look alike from the outside, this is the one that is more often right.
- A door switch that has stopped reporting — The board uses the door signal to run fans, lamps and alarms, so a failed switch produces a spread of unrelated-looking symptoms and often a code. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A failed main control board — It is at the bottom of the list because every cheaper cause above it can produce the same display, and only one of them needs a board.
The diagnostic order
- Cut the power for a few minutes, then restore it — Breaker off or plug out.
- Press every button in turn and note which respond — A pattern, such as one region dead or a neighbour responding instead, points at the membrane rather than the logic. The value is in eliminating, not confirming; most of these come back negative and that is useful.
- Check whether the interior lamp follows the door — The lamp is the cheapest window onto the door switch, and a failed switch explains a lot of odd control behaviour. The rank is a starting point, not a verdict; what you observe outranks it.
What an owner can safely check
- Dry and clean the fascia and its surround — A damp cloth followed by a dry one, working around the edges where water tracks in. If the answer is clear, stop here and act on it.

Isolate the cabinet at the plug or the breaker before you open it. Stored charge does not drain the instant the supply stops. Never put a heat source close to plastic parts or the gasket while you are thawing ice. Leave the door or lid switch wired exactly as you found it; it is a guard and not an inconvenience.
The handover point
Where the owner side ends: you own the reset and the settings; anything that involves the harness behind the fascia belongs to a technician. The split is worth respecting even when the part looks simple. Call without waiting if you can smell burning, see oil around the compressor, or hear the unit trying to start over and over.
