A Commercial Cool refrigerator that has become loud is usually still working, and that is the good news: the noisy parts are the cheap parts. Locate the sound before you do anything else, because the repair for a fan blade catching frost and the repair for a worn compressor mount have nothing in common. Nothing below asks you to open anything that should stay closed.
The observables
- A ticking or chirping that stops when the freezer door opens — Opening the door cuts power to the evaporator fan, so a noise that stops on cue has just identified itself. This is the cheapest information available on the machine.
- A buzz or rattle from underneath at the back — Low and behind means the machinery deck rather than anything inside the food compartments. Write it down before anybody comes out; a described symptom is worth more than a remembered one.
- Gurgling or a trickling sound after the cabinet stops — That is refrigerant and melt water settling, and it is normal on every cabinet of this type. This is the cheapest information available on the machine.
- A vibration that comes through the floor — A vibration you can feel through the floor is usually cured by moving the cabinet a finger’s width. It is worth confirming twice before you act on it, since one observation can mislead.
Causes, most likely first
- Debris or dust in the condenser fan underneath — Second because everything the kitchen floor carries ends up in the machinery deck: fluff, pet hair, a stray bag clip in the blade path, all of it audible and all of it removable.
- The cabinet touching a wall, a cupboard or an uneven floor — Worth checking early precisely because nothing is broken and the cure is free. A cause in this position is worth eliminating before you spend anything.
- A defrost cycle: heater, melt water and expansion ticks — Normal, periodic and frequently reported as a fault. Ask whoever else uses the machine whether they have noticed the same thing.
- A failing fan motor that has started to whine — It sits at the end because the noise is distinctive and the repair is not owner work. A cause in this position is worth eliminating before you spend anything.
The elimination order
- Rock the cabinet gently and feel for contact — A cabinet resting against a wall or a worktop edge makes noise nothing inside it can explain. Confirming it costs less than assuming it, which is why it is worth the few minutes.
- Turn the ice maker off for a day — If the intermittent bangs stop, the maker was never faulty and you have your answer for free. Do it with the machine in its normal state rather than after you have already changed something.
- Check the condenser area for visible debris — A torch under the back of the cabinet usually shows the cause directly: fluff packed against the fan or something loose in the blade path. The rank is a starting point, not a verdict; what you observe outranks it.
What an owner can safely check
- Vacuum the condenser coil and the fan area underneath — With the power off and the plinth or rear panel off, take the dust out with a soft brush and a vacuum rather than pushing it further in. If you can only do one check, make it this one.

- Empty the ice bin and break up welded ice — Old ice fused into a block jams the ejector and makes noises that sound structural. A clean, empty bin is also a fair test. Do not force anything; the plastic in a modern appliance breaks rather than bends.

- Clear the area behind the cabinet of loose items — Packaging, bags and cables behind a machine get pulled against the fan by the airflow and buzz convincingly. Repeat it once if the answer is ambiguous rather than moving on with a maybe.

Safety
Power down at the breaker first, and treat the cabinet as live until you have. Stored charge does not drain the instant the supply stops. A cabinet is heavier than it looks once the door is open; get help rather than walking it alone. Leave the door or lid switch wired exactly as you found it; it is a guard and not an inconvenience.

Put the boundary here: noise you can chase with a vacuum and a spanner is owner work, and noise that needs a fan out of the liner is not. The split is worth respecting even when the part looks simple. Call without waiting if you can smell burning, see oil around the compressor, or hear the unit trying to start over and over.
