The short answer
Start with a lint filter that only looks clean: on a Commercial Care portable compact dryer it accounts for more of these than anything else, and a vent the air cannot get through is the next thing to rule out. This is about as simple as a dryer gets - a drum, a heater, a fan and a mechanical timer - and it is usually set up somewhere temporary with its hose pointed out of a window or a door. The checks below are ordered to match, and the first of them needs no tools at all.
What you observe
- The load is warm but still damp at the end — Heat without airflow, which is the commonest pattern of all.
- Cycles taking two or three times as long — A restriction somewhere in the air path.
- NEAR MISS - the clothes went in soaking wet — Then the washer did not spin, and the dryer is being blamed for it.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A lint filter that is not really clean — The likeliest cause on this brand: a film of fabric softener over the mesh looks clean and passes almost no air, and it is the single most common reason a dryer that used to work stops drying.
- A blocked or badly routed vent — Next most likely: a dryer works by carrying moisture out in moving air, so the whole appliance is only as good as its exhaust path - and a hose that is crushed behind the machine, coiled twice or furred with lint takes that path away.
- More in the drum than the air can get through — Third on the list: clothes dry because air passes between them, so a drum packed solid dries slowly whatever the heater is doing.
Check in this order, and why
- Hold the lint filter up to the light — Two seconds, and a filter you cannot see through explains the whole complaint.
- Take the vent hose off and look through it — The likeliest cause of nearly everything on this page, and it needs one screwdriver.
- Look at how full the drum is — Free, immediate, and it removes the commonest owner cause.

- Wash the lint filter in warm soapy water and dry it — Hold it up to the light: if you cannot see through the mesh clearly, that is your fault found.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer before clearing the vent hose or opening the lint housing; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never exhaust a vented dryer into the room it stands in, and never run it with the filter removed - lint reaching the heater is how dryers catch fire. If yours is a gas model and you smell gas: leave the building without touching any switch, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the filter is clean, the hose runs clear to the outside and the load is small, and it still leaves the clothes damp. Before that, check where the exhaust actually ends: a portable venting into the room it stands in cannot dry anything, and no repair will change that.
