The short answer
A Commercial Care portable compact dryer that has become noisy is most often something loose in the drum or the blower, with a machine standing unevenly close behind. This is about as simple as a dryer gets - a drum, a heater, a fan and a mechanical timer - and it is usually set up somewhere temporary with its hose pointed out of a window or a door. Two of the four are owner work; the last one on the list is not, and knowing which is which saves the call-out.
What you observe
- A rumble or rattle that follows the drum — Drum speed rather than motor speed is the clue.
- The machine and the room get very hot — The heat is staying in the machine instead of leaving it.

Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Something loose in the drum or the blower — First on this cabinet: a coin that has left a pocket ends up in the blower housing, where it produces a hard rattle at exactly drum speed and nothing else does.
- A machine standing unevenly — Second, and close behind: a dryer that rocks on its feet drums against the floor every rotation, and a compact machine standing on a worktop does it loudly.
- Worn drum rollers or glides — Third: the drum rides on rollers or felt pads, and as they wear they produce a rumble that rises with the drum rather than with the motor.
- A worn or slipping belt — Last, and that is the whole point of the order: a belt at the end of its life squeals on start-up or lets the drum stop turning while the motor runs on.
Check in this order, and why
- Run it empty for a minute and listen — A coin in the blower rattles at drum speed and nothing else sounds like it.
- Rock each corner of the machine — Cheap to rule out, and on a compact machine it is a common answer.
- Listen for whether the rumble follows the drum — Rising with the drum rather than the motor names the rollers.

Safety
Unplug the dryer before clearing the vent hose or opening the lint housing; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never exhaust a vented dryer into the room it stands in, and never run it with the filter removed - lint reaching the heater is how dryers catch fire. If yours is a gas model and you smell gas: leave the building without touching any switch, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Call when the drum is empty, the machine is standing solid and level, and a mechanical noise remains. On a portable dryer, weigh that repair against the price of the machine before agreeing to it, because the labour on a small sealed cabinet is rarely proportionate.
