The short answer
These machines wait a long time, so a cycle that seems frozen may simply be waiting on a slow fill. The machine checks the level before it agitates and again before it spins, so a stall always sits at one of those boundaries. Control faults exist but they are last on the list, and they are confirmed by exclusion rather than guessed at.
What the owner sees and hears
- It completes a short programme but not a long one — Run a cold programme deliberately and see how far it gets.
- Repeated attempts at the spin — Open the door, spread the load and restart the spin.
- Locked shut with the cycle abandoned — The lock staying on is expected, not a second fault.
- It stops with water in the drum and will not continue — That is a drain-side fault rather than a control fault — the machine is refusing to spin on a full drum.
- NEAR MISS — dead from the start — The distinction is whether the drum ever moved.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Water supply restricted — Free to check and quick to fix when it is the cause.
- Drainage restricted — A filter that is half full still passes water, which is why it presents as a stall.
- Unbalanced load defeating the spin — Second because a compact machine detects imbalance aggressively, and each retry costs minutes.
- Temperature condition unmet — A failed element or sensor leaves the machine in a permanent wait.
What to check first, second, third
- Run a cycle and watch where it hangs — Note whether there is water in the drum, whether the drum is turning, and whether the pump is running.
- Clean the filter and check the impeller — Turn the impeller by hand while you are there: it should spin freely.
- Test with an even load — Free and immediate, and it settles the balance question in one attempt.
- Confirm water can reach the machine quickly — Close the tap, disconnect at the machine and check the small screen in the inlet.
What to do before the panel comes off
Safety
Stop using the machine at once if a stall comes with a burning smell — a motor or pump held against a blockage overheats. Do not lever the latch when the machine has stopped with the door locked; switch off at the wall and wait for the release. Expect water when you open the filter after a stall: the drum empties through it, so clear and dry the floor first.
