The short answer

What you actually observe
- Scraping that follows the drum — Grinding at wash speed points at something between the drum and the tub more often than at a bearing.
- A rattle from the pump area near the base — This is the same check as the drain page and it is free.
- The machine is not level — Re-level after a spin cycle — the machine settles in the first weeks.
- A low roar rather than a bang — A rumble that tracks speed is a rotating part, not a load problem.

- Debris in the gap — Common wherever pockets go unchecked, which makes it routine rather than exotic.
The order to work in
- Test with the load evened out — First because it is the commonest cause and the result is immediate.
- Rock each corner and adjust until all four bear — Tighten the lock nuts — an unlocked foot undoes itself.
- Confirm the transit hardware is out — Do this on any machine that is not long installed: the holes should be empty and capped.
- Try a mat, a board or a different position — A springy floor makes a level machine loud, so this ranks with the free checks.
- Check the drum for movement in and out — Power off first — the motor can start whenever the cycle resumes.

Isolate the machine before turning the drum by hand — it will run without warning. A machine that spins with the lid up should be taken out of use, not used carefully. A machine that is moving can pull its hoses tight or unplug itself — stop it before it reaches the wall.
