- A circulation or condenser fan touching something — Ranked below the free checks because it needs access even though it is a real fault.
- The condensate pan walking on its rails — High on this platform because the tray sits in the noisiest place in the machine and shifts whenever the cabinet is moved.
What to check first, second, third
- Start with how the unit stands — First because it is free and it fixes the commonest complaint.
- Check the fan area for ice or fouling — Only after the free checks, because it means a panel off and the isolation step comes first.
- Look at the tray over the compressor — A warped tray needs replacing rather than reseating.
- Clear the top and pull it clear of the walls — Second because contact noise dominates on light cabinets.

When to call a technician
