Identifying where and when the sound happens narrows it to one or two parts before anything is opened. Kill the power first, at the outlet or at the panel, and keep it killed while a cover is off; capacitors store energy after the supply is gone. A capacitor keeps a charge after the power is off, so treat the compressor terminals as energised until you have proved otherwise. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
When to call a technician
Book a visit if the sound is accompanied by the unit losing temperature: the noise is then a symptom and the cooling loss is the job. Levelling, cleaning and clearing obstructions are owner work; replacing a fan motor is not. Call if the same fault has now returned twice after being apparently fixed, since the cause was clearly never the one addressed.
