- Moisture or corrosion at a connector — Ranked first: On older cabinets this is more likely than the board itself having failed. It sits at the top here since the line has been out of production long enough that every unit still running is well past its easy years.
- Door switch reporting an open door — Second: It is checked by eye and by ear, with no tools, which is why it comes before anything electronic.
- Supply problem: marginal outlet, extension lead or a shared circuit — Third: This is checked early since it accounts for intermittent faults that come back after any board is replaced.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a thermometer inside and compare with the display overnight — A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below; a display that disagrees with a thermometer names the sensor as the suspect.
- Note whether the problem follows a pattern — A fault that shows up when the kettle boils, or on humid days, is a supply or moisture problem rather than an electronic failure.
- Note whether the problem follows the weather — Faults that appear in warm humid conditions and disappear in cool ones point at sealing and airflow rather than electronics.

- Clean the door switch plunger and its seat — Wipe away spills and sticky residue, and check the plunger springs back freely by hand.

Pull the plug, or trip the breaker that feeds the outlet, before any panel comes off; a stored charge can sit in a capacitor long after the lights go out. The sealed refrigeration circuit is not owner-serviceable — refrigerant is under pressure, the tubing is thin, and opening it is licensed work. Nothing in the sealed circuit is an owner job: it is pressurised, and the law treats venting it as a violation in its own right.
