The signs, and the near misses
- NEAR MISS — the drum will not turn at all — That is a no-start or motor fault instead of a noise complaint.
- A loud rumble or roar that rises with the spin speed — Classic bearing signature: the noise tracks drum speed and grows over weeks.
- A high squeal that comes and goes — Belt or pulley on machines that use one, most audible when the drum changes speed.
- Metallic rattling or scraping during the wash — Something small and hard is between the drum and the tub, usually from a pocket.
Causes, most likely first
- Machine not level or resting on soft flooring — Ranked first: Vinyl and floorboards flex more than tile, so the same machine can be quiet in one room and unbearable in another. Check in this order, and why
- Check the machine is level and all four feet carry weight — A machine that rocks walks, and a machine that walks eventually damages its own hoses and connections.
- Run an empty spin and listen — Noise with an empty drum removes load balance from the picture and points at bearings or a trapped object.
- Rock the machine at each corner — Any movement means a foot is not carrying weight, and that alone explains a great deal of banging.
What an owner can safely do
- Remove or establish the transit bolts — Check the back panel; if bolts are present, remove them and fit the supplied blanking plugs.

- Level the machine and lock the feet — Adjust each foot until the machine will not rock at any corner, then tighten the locknuts so they stay there.

- Redistribute the load and rerun the spin — Separate heavy items, avoid washing a single towel or rug alone, and retry the same programme.

Safety
Power down at the breaker or the plug, then close both supply valves, then start work. A stored charge survives the power going off, and a live hose turns a small repair into a flooded floor. If the floor is already wet, deal with the breaker before you step in it.
Where the owner job ends
A machine that has become noisy and is also leaking should be looked at promptly: worn bearings and a weeping seal travel together. Levelling, loading and the filter are owner work, and anything requiring the drum out is not. Anything that smells of burning, trips a breaker or leaves scorch marks is a stop-now condition instead of a diagnosis to continue.
