The answer first
A dryer only has water in it if it is a condenser or heat-pump machine. On a Care dryer a leak means the condensate path — the tank, the pump or the hose — rather than a supply. That puts a full or badly seated condensate tank at the top of the list here and a machine that is not level at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- Water dripping from the vent duct behind the machine — Humid exhaust condensing in a cold or sagging duct.
- A damp patch that appears only on long cycles — Condensate building faster than it can be removed.
- Water at the back where the drain hose connects — A loose or split condensate drain hose.
- NEAR MISS — clothes are wet, the floor is dry — That is a drying performance question.
The ranking
- A full or badly seated condensate tank — The tank is designed to be emptied every cycle or two. Overfilled or pushed in crooked, it spills down the front of the machine. The pump and the drain path are the parts that meet everything that comes off the laundry, so they are the parts that block.
- A condensate drain hose that is loose, kinked or too high — Where the machine is plumbed to a standpipe, the hose has to run without a rise, or the pump cannot clear it. Drainage is where water that the machine made on purpose goes wrong, so it leads whenever water is the complaint.
- Condensation in a vented machine duct — Warm damp exhaust meeting a cold duct or a sag in a flexible hose leaves water that runs back to the machine. First on this class of machine because the vent, the lint path and the blower are what the platform depends on, and they are also what nobody services until something stops working.
- A machine that is not level — It tips the condensate path and puts water where the design did not.
What to check first, second, third
- Empty the condensate tank and reseat it firmly — Half the leaks on these machines stop right there.
- Look at the condenser or heat exchanger latch — A unit not fully latched leaks every cycle.
- Check the drain hose runs downhill with no rise — A pump lifting water further than intended will leave some behind.
What to try yourself
- Empty the tank and clean its seal and seat — Wipe the housing too; lint on the seal is enough to let water past.

- Straighten the duct or drain hose and remove any low point — Shorten the run if it is longer than it needs to be.

- Level the machine and lock the feet — Condensate paths rely on the machine standing square.

- STOP before opening the cabinet for the pump or the condensate tray — That is a mains-wired cabinet with a heat exchanger inside.

Do not run a machine that is leaking onto its own outlet or power lead. Unplug it, dry everything, and find the source before the next cycle.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call when the tank, the condenser unit and the hose are all sound and water still appears — the pump, the tray and the internal seals are inside the cabinet. Call the same day if water is reaching an outlet or a timber floor.
