What this usually is
Automatic cycles end when the load reads dry. If the machine is reading wrongly, the cycle length goes wrong in both directions. That puts restricted venting at the top of the list here and a timer or control that will not advance at the bottom.
How this presents
- The machine stops and restarts repeatedly — A thermal cut-out cycling, which is an airflow symptom.
- Timed cycles work but automatic ones do not — That isolates the sensing circuit almost perfectly.
- NEAR MISS — the machine will not start at all — That is the no-start page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- Restricted venting — The machine cannot remove moisture, so an automatic cycle never reaches its end condition and a timed one leaves the load damp. First on this class of machine because the vent, the lint path and the blower are what the platform depends on, and they are also what nobody services until something stops working.
- Moisture sensor bars coated with residue — Fabric softener leaves a film on the metal bars inside the drum, and a filmed sensor ends the cycle within minutes. Sensors drift rather than fail, so they are considered before the board they feed.
- A thermal cut-out cycling on overheat — The machine stops and restarts as the safety device opens and closes. The vent is the underlying cause. It ranks here because it explains the symptom fully but needs a little more looking than the ones above it.
- A load too small or too large to sense — A single item can dry without ever touching the sensor bars; an overloaded drum never tumbles across them.
- A timer or control that will not advance — On mechanical machines the timer motor itself can fail.
The diagnostic order
- Run a timed cycle and compare with an automatic one — If timed works, the fault is in the sensing circuit rather than the heat.
- Wipe the sensor bars inside the drum — A little vinegar on a cloth removes softener film in a minute.
- Feel the exhaust at the outside hood mid-cycle — Weak flow explains both a long cycle and a stopping one.
The owner-side procedure
- Clean the moisture sensor bars — A cloth with a little white vinegar, then wipe dry.

- Clean the lint filter and clear the vent duct — It addresses long cycles, short cycles and thermal stops together.

- Dry a normal, medium load on an automatic cycle — Small or single-item loads are not a fair test of a sensing cycle.
- STOP before testing the cut-out, the timer or the control — All are metered tests inside a mains-wired cabinet.
The safety line
Safety
A machine that keeps stopping on its thermal cut-out is overheating, and overheating with lint present is a fire risk. Clear the vent before running it again, and unplug before opening anything — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off.
Where the owner side ends
Sensor bars, filters, ducts and load size are yours. Cut-outs, timers and control boards are service work, and repeated overheating needs sorting before anything else.
