The short answer
Most refrigerator noise is a fan touching something, a component that is loose, or a cabinet that is not level — and where the noise comes from narrows it faster than what it sounds like.
What you observe
- A buzzing or humming that rises and falls with the cooling cycle
- A rattle from the back of the cabinet, worse on hard floors
- A ticking, scraping or chirping from inside the freezer section
- A gurgle or a knock a few moments after the cabinet stops running
- A rocking cabinet that thumps when a door closes
- A loud fan that appears only after the door has been open a while
- The noise arrives with a warming cabinet — Means: an airflow or defrost fault rather than a mechanical one
- A grinding or clunking traced to the ice compartment — Means: an ice-maker mechanism problem
