Countertop and built-in machines both stop for the same two reasons: the supply and the door. On a Café microwave those are proved before anything else is considered. That puts no power at the outlet at the top of the list here and a clock or timer left in a set state at the bottom.
How this presents
- It works only when the door is pushed hard — A latch or a switch out of adjustment.
- It stopped working after being moved or cleaned — A plug half out, or water where the panel meets the cabinet.
- The clock is lit but no function responds — Power is present; the machine is refusing to run.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but food stays cold — The machine is running. That is the heating page.
Likely causes on this kind of machine
- No power at the outlet — A tripped breaker, a GFCI on a kitchen counter circuit or a switched outlet. It is the first thing to prove and the cheapest to fix. Supply is proved before anything is condemned, because a dead outlet and a dead appliance look identical.
- The door latches are not making their switches — A microwave has several interlocks in series. One that is not made stops everything with the display still lit. The door carries the switches and the interlocks, so a door fault presents as a whole-machine fault.
- A child lock or a demo mode — A locked panel accepts nothing, and demo mode runs the display with the magnetron disabled. It comes first on a built-in because the electronics are the only part of the machine an owner can observe without pulling the appliance out of its cabinet.
- A failed membrane keypad — Some keys work and others do not, or the panel ignores everything.
- A clock or timer left in a set state — Some machines refuse to start while a timer or a delayed programme is pending.
The diagnostic order
- Open and close the door firmly and try again — A door that has to be pushed to work is already the answer.
- Check the panel for a lock symbol — Cleared from the panel and free to rule out.
- Try the machine on a completely different circuit — It removes both the outlet and the counter circuit from the picture in one move.

- Clean the door and the latch recesses — Grease and crumbs in the latch pockets stop the switches making.

- Unplug the machine for several minutes, then plug it back in directly — No strip, no extension lead, and nothing else on the outlet.
- STOP — do not open the cabinet for any reason — A microwave holds a high-voltage capacitor that can retain a lethal charge long after it is unplugged.

When to call a technician
Call once the outlet, the door and any lock are proved and the machine still does nothing. Everything past that point is inside the cabinet, and a microwave cabinet is technician-only work. Call immediately if it trips a breaker or smells burnt.
