The short answer
Dead panel or a panel that lights and will not run: the two are different faults. The first is power, the second is almost always the door. That puts no power at the outlet at the top of the list here and a power strip or a shared counter outlet at the bottom.
What the machine is doing
- The display works but start does nothing — The door interlocks are not confirming, or a lock is set.
- It runs for a second and stops — An interlock dropping out, or a protective device cutting in.
- NEAR MISS — the light stays on with the door shut — A switch fault, and it belongs with the door page.
What causes this, in order of likelihood here
- No power at the outlet — A tripped breaker, a GFCI on a kitchen counter circuit or a switched outlet. It is the first thing to prove and the cheapest to fix. First on a countertop machine: it shares a kitchen counter circuit with a kettle, a toaster and an air fryer, and a machine that draws hard is the one that finds a marginal circuit.
- The door latches are not making their switches — A microwave has several interlocks in series. One that is not made stops everything with the display still lit. The door on a countertop machine is opened dozens of times a day and carries the interlocks, so the door is where the wear is.
- A child lock or a demo mode — A locked panel accepts nothing, and demo mode runs the display with the magnetron disabled. Ranked here because on a countertop machine the control side is what the environment attacks — heat, steam and constant wiping — so it is checked before anything deeper.
- A power strip or a shared counter outlet — A microwave next to a kettle and a toaster finds the limit of a shared circuit, and the strip is the first thing to fail.
The diagnostic order
- Open and close the door firmly and try again — A door that has to be pushed to work is already the answer.
- Check the panel for a lock symbol — Cleared from the panel and free to rule out.
- Try the machine on a completely different circuit — It removes both the outlet and the counter circuit from the picture in one move.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Unplug the machine for several minutes, then plug it back in directly — No strip, no extension lead, and nothing else on the outlet.
- Dry the control area and leave the machine unused for a day — If liquid got behind the panel, time is the only owner remedy.
