The short answer
Clean the seal face and the door edge - above a cooktop they collect grease continuously. Check the latch closes without lifting and look for damage to the screen behind the inner glass. If the door is bent, the screen is damaged or the oven ever runs with the door open, isolate it and stop using it.
What you observe
- The door needs a shove or a lift to latch — A hinge sagging under a heavy door, or a worn catch.
- Steam or heat escaping round the door edge — A soiled or deformed seal face.
- A visible gap at one corner when closed — A door out of square, which is not an owner adjustment.
- The oven stops and restarts as the door is nudged — An interlock only just making contact.
- NEAR MISS - condensation on the inner glass after steamy cooking — Normal above a cooktop.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Cooking grease on the seal face — First on an over-range unit, and unique to this position. Grease and steam from the cooktop build a film on the flat face round the opening that holds the door off it.
- A worn latch or a sagging hinge — Second. The door is heavy and used constantly, and a catch that has worn or a hinge that has dropped leaves an interlock unmade.
- A door bent by weight or a knock — Third. A door used as a shelf or caught by a cupboard goes out of square, which an owner cannot correct.
- A damaged screen behind the inner glass — Fourth, and the most serious. The perforated screen is part of the shield, and a tear, burn or dent takes the oven out of service.
- An interlock switch failing — Last. It shows as an oven that will not start, or far worse as one that runs with the door ajar - which means isolate immediately.
Check in this order, and why
- Degrease the seal face and try the door again — Above a cooktop this is the cheapest and most likely answer.
- Close the door slowly and watch the gap — A gap at one corner means the door is out of square.
- Look through the inner glass at the screen — Any tear, burn or dent means stop using the oven.
- Confirm it never runs with the door open — If it does, isolate it at once and do not test again.

Safety
A microwave oven contains a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a lethal charge long after the oven is unplugged, so the case must never be opened by an owner. Never defeat, tape or adjust a door interlock, and never run the oven with a damaged door, a damaged screen or the door held shut by hand. If it ever runs with the door open, isolate the circuit at once and do not use it again.
When to call a technician
Call when the door is bent or sits crooked, when the screen behind the glass is damaged in any way, when the latch no longer holds reliably, or when the oven starts with the door not fully closed - isolate it in that case first. Call as well if degreasing the seal face does not restore a normal close, because a door that still will not seat needs measuring.
