What you are most likely looking at
Ice makers are slow, and that alone accounts for many complaints. On a Café refrigerator it is worth giving a cleared machine a full day before deciding anything is broken. That puts the shut-off arm or the ice maker switch is off at the top of the list here and a door that is not sealing at the bottom.
What you observe
- Ice is produced but at a fraction of the usual rate — A restricted supply or a freezer running warmer than it should.
- Cubes are hollow or misshapen — The fill is short, which points at the valve or the line.
- NEAR MISS — no ice and no water from the dispenser either — That is a supply fault upstream of both, and it is a plumbing check before an appliance one.
The ranking
- The shut-off arm or the ice maker switch is off — First because it is free to check and it explains a real share of these calls — the arm is knocked up by a bag of frozen food and the machine stops obediently. It leads here because the display is where this line announces its own faults, and reading it first saves dismantling something that was never wrong.
- The shut-off arm or sensor reading full — An arm nudged up by a stacked bin stops production entirely, and it is the first thing to look at. Electronics are checked here because a mode or a lock imitates a dead machine and costs nothing to clear.
- A freezer that is not cold enough to harvest — The mould has to reach a harvest temperature before the cycle completes. A freezer running warm makes soft ice, slow ice or no ice at all. Air distribution decides what the owner feels, so a blocked path outranks the components behind it.
- A door that is not sealing — Warm air into a freezer makes ice that partly melts and refreezes into a block, which reads as an ice-maker fault and is a door fault.
The order of checks
- Read the freezer temperature with a thermometer — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and a freezer above that will not harvest reliably either.
- Look for ice at the mouth of the fill tube — A visible plug at the tube is a complete answer, found without tools.
- Check when the filter was last changed — A filter past its life is the commonest reason for small or hollow cubes, and it is the cheapest part on the machine.
The owner-side procedure
- Confirm the ice maker is switched on and the arm is down — Move anything in the bin that is holding the arm up, and leave the maker a full day before judging it.
- Check the supply valve behind or under the cabinet — Follow the line from the unit back to its shut-off and confirm it is fully open and not kinked against the wall.

- STOP before removing the ice maker or testing its terminals — The module, the mould heater and the fill valve are metered tests on live terminals behind a panel.
