What owners actually report
- Dishes are wet at the end of every cycle — A drying symptom — heat, rinse aid or an opened door too early.
- The wash water is barely warm to the touch — Open the door mid-cycle and feel the steam. No steam is a heating fault.
- A burnt smell or melted plastic on the tub floor — Something has touched the element. Stop using the machine until it has been checked.

The ranking
- Rinse aid empty or set too low — Rinse aid is what makes water sheet off rather than bead. Without it, dishes stay wet even when the heat is perfect. How the machine is loaded produces symptoms that read exactly like failures, so habits are checked before parts.
- The machine is filling with cold water — A long pipe run, or a machine plumbed to cold, leaves every cycle starting well below where it should. Plumbed premium units carry a filter, a valve and a long internal tube run, every one of which is a candidate the moment water appears.
- An eco or short cycle that never heats much — Eco programmes trade heat for energy. The machine is doing exactly what was selected. It leads here because the display is where this line announces its own faults, and reading it first saves dismantling something that was never wrong.
- A thermostat or temperature sensor out of range — The machine stops heating because it believes it is already hot enough.
The order of checks
- Check the rinse-aid reservoir and its setting — It is the first thing to eliminate and it explains most wet-dish complaints.
- Open the door during the main wash and feel for steam — Steam means the heat is there and the problem is drying.
- Run the hot tap at the sink before starting — It proves what temperature the machine is actually being fed.
- Look at the element in the tub floor for damage — Blistering, a melted item resting on it or a break is visible without tools.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Select a hotter programme rather than eco — It confirms whether the machine can heat when it is asked to.
- Open the door at the end of the cycle and let the load steam off — Condensing machines dry far better with the door cracked open once the cycle ends.
- STOP before testing the element or the thermostat — Both are metered tests on mains-voltage terminals under the machine.

Safety
Melted plastic on the element is a fire risk rather than a nuisance: stop using the machine until it has been cleared and checked. Kill the power at the breaker before any panel comes off.
When to stop and call
Call when rinse aid, cycle selection and a hot supply are all ruled out and the water still is not heating — the element, the thermostat and the wiring behind them are metered work. Call immediately if anything has melted onto the element or the machine smells burnt.
