The answer first
Poor cleaning is almost always a water problem: not enough of it, not hot enough, or not reaching the dishes. On a Café dishwasher the spray arms and the loading pattern are where this starts. That puts spray arms blocked or not turning at the top of the list here and water not hot enough at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- Detergent left undissolved in the dispenser — The dispenser did not open, or the water was too cool to dissolve it.
- Cloudy plastics and streaky stainless — A rinse-aid and drying symptom more than a washing one.
- NEAR MISS — clean but soaking wet at the end — That is a drying or heating question and it belongs on the heating page.
The ranking
- Spray arms blocked or not turning — Jets clog with seeds and scale, and an arm that cannot spin leaves whole sections of the load untouched. Plumbed premium units carry a filter, a valve and a long internal tube run, every one of which is a candidate the moment water appears.
- Loading that blocks the spray — A large plate or a tray across the lower basket shadows everything behind it. How the machine is loaded produces symptoms that read exactly like failures, so habits are checked before parts.
- A dirty filter recirculating soil — Once the filter is loaded, the machine washes with the water it has just dirtied. Drainage is where water that the machine made on purpose goes wrong, so it leads whenever water is the complaint.
- A weak fill from a restricted valve or screen — Too little water in the tub means the pump cannot build pressure at the arms.
- Water not hot enough — Detergent needs heat to work. A long pipe run from the water heater, or a heating fault, leaves the wash cool.
The order of checks
- Spin both spray arms by hand — They should turn freely. Anything stiff or fouled is found in seconds.
- Hold an arm up to the light and look at the jets — Blocked jets are visible, and they map exactly onto the dirty section of the load.
- Pull the filter and check it for grease and grit — A loaded filter explains a gradual decline better than any component.
The checks you can do without a meter
- Clean the filter and wipe the sump — Hot soapy water and a soft brush; refit it the way it came out.

- Clear every spray-arm jet — Remove the arms if they unclip, and push each blocked jet clear with a toothpick.

- STOP before removing the sump or the wash pump — Both mean mains wiring and a dismantled machine.
Before you open anything
Safety
Machine cleaners are strong: follow the label, run them with the machine empty, and never mix them with bleach. Kill the power at the breaker before anything below the filter comes out.
The line between a fix and a service call
Call when the arms spin freely, the filter is clean, the fill is hot and the dishes are still dirty — that points at the pump, the diverter or the fill valve, all inside the machine. Call sooner if the wash water is not getting hot at all.
