- Listen for the evaporator fan on restart — A fan that starts and then falls silent as the cabinet cools is a blade fouling on ice, not a dead motor.

Unplug before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Thaw ice off the evaporator with time or a hair dryer on low from a distance, never with a pick or a knife. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below and a freezer at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, so move anything perishable out before you start rather than after, and keep the doors shut while you work.
