A Caf CDE cabinet makes noise where it moves air and water. Timing is what separates the causes here: a sound tied to the compressor start, one that comes every few hours for a few seconds, and one that rises with the cabinet temperature are three different faults, and only the last is urgent.
What you can observe on these models
- A rhythmic clicking from the ice maker area — The harvest motor stalling against a jammed ejector or a full bin repeats its attempt on a cycle.
- A grinding or chattering that stops when the freezer door is opened — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so this test points straight at a blade fouling on ice or a worn fan bearing.
- A buzz for a few seconds every few hours — That is the water inlet valve filling the ice maker. It is normal in itself; a loud one is a valve or a supply pressure problem.
- A rattle from the lower back of the cabinet — The condenser fan shroud, the drain pan and the compressor cover all live there, and all three rattle when loose.
- NEAR MISS — the noise comes with a warm cabinet — Noise plus lost cooling is a cooling fault first. Treat the temperature as the symptom and work the not-cooling page instead.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Ice maker cycle noise — fill valve and harvest — First on a cabinet whose noise is intermittent and periodic: nothing else on the platform runs for a few seconds and then goes quiet for hours.
- Condenser fan or compressor-compartment rattle — Second because the sound is loudest from behind the unit, which already separates it from anything inside.
- Evaporator fan blade contact with frost — Third here, but move it to first the moment the noise stops with the freezer door open.
- Cabinet level, rollers and floor — Fourth, and worth doing first anyway if the unit was recently moved.
- Tubing contact or a worn compressor mount — Last: a knock only at compressor start, with normal running noise otherwise, is the classic signature and it is rarely urgent.
Check in this order, and why
- Rock the cabinet gently at a front corner — Movement means the feet or rollers are not carrying it evenly, and that alone accounts for most vibration complaints.
- Press a hand on the drain pan and the rear panel in turn — A rattle that changes under light hand pressure is a loose part, not a failing motor.
- Listen at the freezer with the door switch held in — This is the only way to hear the evaporator fan under normal operation without the panel off.
- Correlate the last check with the temperature — If the noisiest part is also the fan that moves the cold, the repair moves from cosmetic to urgent.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Levelling one of these cabinets means taking the weight on the feet, not rocking a loaded cabinet: empty the doors first, have a second person steady it, and never tilt it backwards far enough for the compressor oil to move into the lines.
