The short answer
A Caf CIC cabinet that hums steadily while the food warms is telling you the cold is being made and not delivered. What you can observe on these models
- The cabinet sides feel hot to the hand — Condenser tubing runs through the shell on many builds; heat there says the system is working hard against a fouled condenser.
- Cooling recovers for a day after the unit is unplugged overnight — That is the defrost signature: the manual thaw clears the coil, and the fault returns as soon as the ice rebuilds.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and nothing is cold — No hum at all is a power, start-relay or control fault, not a cooling fault. That belongs on the no-power page, not this one.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Condenser coil fouled or condenser fan not turning — First on these models when the cabinet sides run hot: heat that cannot leave the condenser comes straight back into the cabinet, and the fix is a vacuum and a brush.
- Defrost circuit no longer clearing the evaporator — Second because the overnight-thaw test separates it from everything else on this list without a single tool.
- Evaporator fan motor stopped — Third: listen at the freezer with the door switch held in — no airflow noise there and the rest of the list becomes far less likely.

Check in this order, and why
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — On these models the fan is behind the freezer rear panel and the door switch cuts it, so hold the switch in to hear it. This one check splits the two likeliest causes.
- Look at the freezer rear panel for a frost sheet — Frost across the panel with the fan running is the defrost signature; a clear panel with no airflow is the fan.
- Pull the unit out and feel the condenser — Heavy dust, or a condenser fan that is not turning, caps the capacity no matter how healthy the rest is.
Before you open anything

Kill the power at the plug or the breaker first; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Pulling one of these cabinets out to reach the condenser is a two-person move on a hard floor and a slow one on tile — walk it straight out, keep the water line slack in view, and never let the cabinet tip back. Refrigerant work is licensed work: if the fault turns out to be in the sealed system, the line stops there.

When to call a technician
Call when the checks above come back clean, when the evaporator refuses to stay clear after a manual thaw, or the moment a component test needs a meter.
