The short answer

Causes, most likely first on this family
- Ice maker cycle noise — fill valve and harvest — Ranked first because switching the ice maker off is a free, reversible test that settles it in a day.
- Condenser fan or compressor-compartment rattle — Second: it runs whenever the compressor runs, so it is present for long stretches rather than in bursts.
- Evaporator fan blade contact with frost — Third — it needs the freezer rear panel off to confirm, so it comes after the checks that do not.
- Cabinet level, rollers and floor — Fourth: a rocking cabinet turns every internal noise into a boom through the floor and hides which part is really making it.
- Tubing contact or a worn compressor mount — Last because it needs the compressor cover off with the power isolated.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the freezer door while the noise is happening — The door switch cuts the evaporator fan on these models, so a noise that stops immediately is that fan and a noise that continues is not.
- Note whether the sound tracks the compressor — Continuous with the run means the condenser side; bursts every few hours mean the ice maker; only at start means mounts or tubing.
- Pull the unit out and look at the lower compartment — With the power off, check the condenser fan blade path, the drain pan seat and anything resting against the tubing.
- Put a level on the top of the cabinet — Leave this last only because it is the one check that can be done at any time; on a rocking cabinet, do it first.

Unplug before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Levelling one of these cabinets means taking the weight on the feet, not rocking a loaded cabinet: empty the doors first, have a second person steady it, and never tilt it backwards far enough for the compressor oil to move into the lines.
