Before anything is condemned on a Bull refrigerator, it is worth separating two different faults that look identical from the front: air that cannot circulate inside, and heat that cannot leave at the back. That puts ambient temperature outside what the unit was rated for at the top of the list here and blocked return air or a stalled evaporator fan at the bottom.
Symptoms, including the ones that mean something else
- Cold at the bottom, warm at the top — or the reverse — A temperature split inside one compartment is an air-distribution symptom rather than a refrigeration one.
- The outside of the cabinet or the rear grille is hot to the touch — Warmth is normal.
- NEAR MISS — only the ice supply has stopped while food is still cold — That is an ice-maker or water-supply fault. The cabinet is doing its job.
Likely causes on this kind of machine
- Ambient temperature outside what the unit was rated for — Refrigeration is rated against surrounding air. It leads on an island unit because the cabinet sits beside a working grill: the air it is asked to reject heat into is hotter than any kitchen.
- A blocked or dirty condenser coil — The coil is how the unit gets rid of the heat it removed. High on an outdoor unit — grease from the grill above, pollen and lawn dust blanket the condenser far faster than household dust ever does indoors.
- A condenser fan that has stopped — The coil can be spotless and still shed no heat if the fan beside it is not turning. Heat rejection is where a running machine quietly fails, so the coil is eliminated before anything internal is suspected.
- Blocked return air or a stalled evaporator fan — Cold air has to circulate.
What to check first, second, third
- Put a hand on the rear grille or the condenser area — Strong heat means the system is working and the problem is heat rejection.
- Put a thermometer in each compartment overnight — One reading tells you little; two compartments over a night tells you which system is failing.
- Check the gap behind and above the cabinet — A unit in a tight alcove is re-breathing its own warm air.
- Look for an air vent buried behind food — Cold air has to leave the vent before it can reach anything.
Step by step, as far as it is safe to go
- Unload the interior enough to clear every vent — Pull items away from the rear wall and the vent openings, then leave the unit closed for a full day before judging it.
- Run a full manual defrost if you found ice — Empty the cabinet, switch it off and leave the doors open until the coil is clear and dry.

- STOP at the point where a panel or a meter is needed — Testing a fan motor, a defrost heater or a sensor means live terminals behind a panel.

Safety
Everything above is done with the unit plugged in and closed, or with it unplugged. The moment a panel has to come off, kill the power at the breaker first: a stored charge does not care that the machine is off. Never wedge or tape a door switch to keep a fan running while you look.
When this stops being a home repair
Call once the condenser, the door and the air path are all clean and the cabinet still will not hold temperature — at that point the remaining candidates are behind a panel.
