The short answer
On a Brevino countertop cooler the commonest cause of a noise complaint is the surface it stands on, and the commonest real fault is a dusty fan. If your unit never falls silent it almost certainly has no compressor, and a continuous hum is normal rather than a fault.
What you observe
- A continuous hum that never stops — Typical of a cooler that has no compressor. Normal.
- A drumming that stops if you lift the cabinet slightly — The worktop is resonating, not the cooler.
- A whirr that has grown into a rattle over weeks — Dust on a fan blade, which unbalances it.
- Bottles clinking as the cabinet settles — Contents on a rack that is not full.
- NEAR MISS - a faint trickle after a cycle — Refrigerant settling on a compressor model. Normal.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- The surface the cooler stands on — First on a countertop unit. A light cabinet cannot damp itself, so a hollow counter or a thin sideboard turns an ordinary fan into a hum that fills the room.
- A dusty or obstructed fan — Second, and the commonest real fault. The fans run continuously on a solid-state cooler, and dust on a blade unbalances it into a rattle.
- Feet that are missing or uneven — Third. The rubber feet are what isolate the cabinet from the surface; lose one and the unit is effectively bolted to the worktop.
- Bottles moving on the racks — Fourth, and instantly testable. A part-filled rack lets glass shift at every change in the cabinet.
- A failing compressor, where one is fitted — Last, and uncommon. A low knock present whenever it runs, unaffected by moving the cabinet.
Check in this order, and why
- Lift the cooler slightly while it runs — If most of the noise goes, the surface was the instrument.
- Note whether the sound ever stops — A sound that never stops is a fan, not a compressor.
- Look into the rear vent for dust on the fan — Visible with a torch, and free to clear.
- Steady the bottles and racks in turn — Whichever silences the noise is your source.

- Stand the cooler on a solid, heavy surface — Stone or a dense mat rather than a hollow counter or a thin shelf.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cooler before cleaning the vent or moving it - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off even on a small unit. Never poke anything through the fan guard while it is plugged in. Keep the vents clear of walls and splashbacks at all times, because a cooler that cannot reject its heat gets hot enough to be a fire risk rather than merely ineffective.
When to call a technician
Call, or consider replacement, when the cooler is on a solid surface, the vent is clear, the feet are sound and a grinding or knocking persists. On a cabinet this size the part and the labour usually approach the price of the unit, so ask for both before committing. Unplug it and call immediately if the case smells hot or is too hot to touch.
