The short answer
On a Bourdeau wine cellar the usual noise is bottles moving on wooden shelves, or the joinery opening resonating with the compressor. Both are owner fixes, and both matter more here than in a drinks cabinet because vibration reaches the wine. The compressor is the least likely cause.
What you observe
- A tap or click as the compressor starts and stops — Bottles shifting on a shelf that is not full.
- A buzz that changes when you press the door or the cabinet — The joinery is resonating rather than the machine failing.
- A whirring from the grille that follows the cooling cycle — The condenser fan doing its job.
- A rattle from a shelf you can stop with one hand — A slide runner that has worked loose.
- NEAR MISS - a soft trickle a minute after cooling stops — Refrigerant settling. Normal, and no repair.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Bottles moving on the wooden shelves — First on a wine cabinet. Shelves are designed to hold bottles loosely so they can be drawn out, so a part-filled shelf lets glass shift against wood at every compressor start.
- Resonance in the joinery opening — Second. A slim cabinet inside a plywood box shares everything it does with that box, and a fan running at one speed will find its natural frequency.
- A restricted front grille — Third. This is the cabinet's only airway, and a kickboard fitted flush or a grille furred with dust makes the fan work far harder for the same air.
- Loose shelf runners or a loose trim piece — Fourth, and easy to prove by hand. Wooden shelves ride on runners that work loose over years of being drawn out.
- A failing fan bearing or compressor — Last, and rare. A steady whine or a low knock, unaffected by anything you press or move.
Check in this order, and why
- Press on the door, the trim and the cabinet in turn — A noise that changes under your hand is resonance, not refrigeration.
- Steady each shelf while the compressor runs — Whichever one silences the noise is your source.
- Clear and vacuum the front grille — The only airway, and free to restore.
- Draw each shelf out and check its runners — A loose runner rattles at one compressor speed only.

- Fill or pack the shelves so bottles cannot move — Seat every bottle fully back and stop glass touching bare glass or a shelf edge.

Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the cabinet off at its breaker before removing the grille or any panel - a built-in is often hardwired, so there may be no plug to pull, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Empty the shelves before moving a loaded wine cabinet: bottles make it heavy and top-heavy, and the door is a large pane. Keep the cabinet upright at all times.
When to call a technician
Call when the shelves are packed, the grille is clear, the cabinet is level and a whine or knock persists. A steady fan whine needs the rear panel off; a knock that follows the compressor needs gauges. Call sooner than you would for a drinks fridge, because persistent vibration reaching stored wine is a reason not to live with the noise.
