Check in this order
- Establish whether the machine is vented or condensing — Because: the two produce completely different sources of water and share nothing
- Check the container and its seat — Because: it is the most common source and needs no tools
- Dry the floor and lay paper to find where the water arrives — Because: front, rear and corner each point at a different cause
- On a vented machine, check the duct run for sags and cold sections — Because: that is where the water comes from and no repair inside the machine will change it
Owner checks, in order
- Establish from the back of the machine whether it has an exhaust duct or a water container — Tools: a torch — Time: a few minutes
- Empty the container, wipe its seat and refit it firmly — Tools: a cloth — Time: a few minutes
- Dry the floor completely and lay paper under the front, the rear and both sides, then run a wet load — Tools: towels, paper — Time: an hour or more

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Lint is fuel. A blocked vent is the single largest fire risk this appliance presents, and clearing it is maintenance rather than repair. Never run the machine with the door switch defeated or a panel removed — the drum and the heater are both exposed.
