The short answer
When a dryer returns laundry in worse condition than it went in, the cause is usually what the machine is being asked to do rather than a failure in it. This is a compact, apartment-scale appliance built on an imported OEM platform, and its cabinet, its hoses and the clearance around them are doing more of the work than they would on a full-size appliance, and that is where the ranking starts. - Overloading the drum — Why here: a packed drum cannot tumble, so items crease, dry unevenly and hold their smell — Confirmed by: the load fills more than about two thirds of the drum before the machine starts
- Load left sitting in the drum after the cycle — Why here: free to correct and the most common single cause of both creasing and a stale smell — Confirmed by: the problem appears on loads that were left in the machine and not on loads taken out promptly
- Lint filter loaded or damaged — Why here: first because a filter that is not catching lint puts it straight back onto the load, and it is checked in seconds — Confirmed by: a visible film on the filter, or a tear in the mesh
- Drum, seal or condenser holding residue — Why here: ranks here because a machine that has not been cleaned transfers what it holds onto every load — Confirmed by: marks that transfer onto light-coloured items, or a smell that is present in the empty drum
- Wrong cycle or excessive heat for the fabric — Why here: last of the routine causes: a hot cycle on synthetics scorches and sets creases that no later step removes — Confirmed by: damage concentrated on synthetic items, with cottons unaffected
Check in this order
- Look at the lint filter after a load — Because: a filter catching nothing is putting lint back on the clothes
- Check how full the drum is at the start — Because: overloading explains creasing, uneven drying and smell at the same time
- Note whether the bad loads are the ones left sitting — Because: it is free and it explains most stale-smell complaints
- Smell the empty drum — Because: that separates a machine problem from a laundry problem

- Run a normal load, then inspect the lint filter — a filter catching almost nothing is either damaged or bypassed — Tools: none — Time: an hour or more
- Wash the filter with detergent and a brush and rinse it until water passes straight through — Tools: a brush, detergent — Time: a few minutes

- Wipe the drum, the door seal and the front lip with a damp cloth, and clean the condenser if the machine has one — Tools: a cloth, a torch — Time: roughly half an hour
- Take the next load out as soon as the cycle ends and compare the creasing against a load left to stand — Tools: none — Time: an hour or more
- Stop condition: Stop before any test that would put a meter on live terminals.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Lint is fuel. A blocked vent is the single largest fire risk this appliance presents, and clearing it is maintenance rather than repair. Never run the machine with the door switch defeated or a panel removed — the drum and the heater are both exposed.
