The short answer

- Water supply not reaching the maker — Why here: only applies to plumbed cabinets, but when it does it is definitive — no water, no ice — Confirmed by: the maker cycles and nothing fills, or the fill tube is frozen
- Freezer not cold enough to complete a harvest — Why here: first because an ice maker will not cycle until the mould reaches its release temperature, so a marginal freezer produces exactly this complaint — Confirmed by: a freezer thermometer sitting above the safe holding temperature, and cubes that are small or hollow
- Frost buildup around the evaporator or the fill tube — Why here: the most common physical blockage, and the one that produces both no-ice and ice-in-the-wrong-place at once — Confirmed by: a solid frost slab behind the back panel, or ice bridging the fill tube
- Ice maker arm, switch or bin position — Why here: ranks high because it is free to check and is the reason for a surprising share of dead ice makers — Confirmed by: the shut-off arm is lifted, or the bin is not pushed fully home
- Door left open, or seals letting humid air in — Why here: humid air is what turns a freezer into a frost box, so it belongs above component failure on any frost complaint — Confirmed by: frost on everything rather than in one place, and condensation at the frame
Check in this order
- Read a thermometer in the freezer — a freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below — Because: no ice maker will harvest from a mould that never gets cold enough, and this single reading redirects the whole diagnosis
- Check the shut-off arm and the bin seating — Because: it is free and it explains a large share of ice makers that appear dead
- Look for frost at the evaporator and at the fill tube — Because: frost explains both no-ice and unwanted ice, and it is visible without tools
- On a plumbed cabinet, confirm water actually arrives at the mould — Because: it is the last thing an owner can establish before the module itself is in question
Owner checks, in order
- Put a thermometer in the freezer, leave it undisturbed, and read it — the target is 0 °F (−18 °C) or below — Tools: a freezer thermometer — Time: several hours, unattended
- Lift and lower the shut-off arm, empty the bin and re-seat it fully — Tools: none — Time: a few minutes

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator is heavy and top-heavy on its castors. Never work with your hands behind a cabinet that is not chocked, and never tip one alone. The sealed refrigerant circuit is not owner-serviceable. Do not cut, bend or braze any tube, and do not attempt to add refrigerant.
