The short answer
A refrigerator that is warm but running is a different fault from one that is warm and silent, and the split between those two is the first thing to establish. Likely causes, most likely first
- Condenser coil and the space around it choked with dust — Why here: heat that cannot leave the coil comes straight back as a warm cabinet, and this is the fault an owner can actually fix — Confirmed by: the grille or the back of the cabinet is furred with lint, and the compressor area is hot rather than warm
- Airflow blocked between the freezer and the fresh-food side — Why here: the single most common report on any cabinet that is cold in one compartment and warm in the other, and it costs nothing to rule out — Confirmed by: the vent between the compartments is packed with food, or the evaporator behind the freezer back panel is buried in frost
- Evaporator fan stopped or running intermittently — Why here: with the fan down the freezer still makes cold and the fresh-food side never receives it, which is exactly the pattern owners describe — Confirmed by: no air movement at the vent with the door switch held in, and the freezer is colder than it should be while the fridge is warm
Check in this order
- Put a thermometer on the middle shelf and read it after several hours — Because: the whole diagnosis forks on whether the cabinet is warm everywhere or warm in one compartment
- Empty the vent path between the compartments and check for air movement — Because: blocked airflow and a stopped fan explain most single-compartment failures and cost nothing to test
- Pull the grille and look at the condenser — Because: a choked coil is the highest-yield owner fix and it is visible without tools
- Look behind the freezer back panel for frost — Because: a frosted evaporator separates a defrost fault from an airflow fault, and only then is a sealed-system fault worth raising
Owner checks, in order
- Move a thermometer to the middle shelf, close the door and leave it undisturbed, then read it — a refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below — Tools: a fridge thermometer — Time: several hours, unattended
- Unload the shelf in front of the vent between the compartments and check that nothing is pressed against the back wall — Tools: none — Time: a few minutes
- Unplug the cabinet, pull the base grille, and vacuum the condenser coil and the fan behind it — Tools: a vacuum with a crevice tool, a coil brush — Time: roughly half an hour

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A refrigerator is heavy and top-heavy on its castors. Never work with your hands behind a cabinet that is not chocked, and never tip one alone. The sealed refrigerant circuit is not owner-serviceable. Do not cut, bend or braze any tube, and do not attempt to add refrigerant.
