The short answer

- Internal hose clip relaxed with age — Vibration and heat cycles loosen clips over years, and the sump and pump connections are the usual ones.
What to check first, second, third
- Check the machine is level and sitting square in the housing — A tub leaning forward spills at the door, and levelling is free.
- Dry the floor and run a short cycle with paper towel at the plinth — It catches the door leak in the act and tells you whether the water is arriving at the front or from behind.
- Halve the detergent dose and repeat the same programme — A foam leak stops immediately, which makes this the fastest way to eliminate the commonest non-fault.
- Check the inlet union with a dry tissue at the valve — A weep under mains pressure shows on tissue long before it shows on the floor.

Kill the power and close the supply valve before any fitting is touched. The inlet side is under mains pressure whenever the valve is open, whether the machine is running or not.
