In short

The observable tells
- A bad smell from the machine between cycles — Standing water and trapped debris in the sump, and it usually accompanies a partial blockage.
- Dishes come out gritty as well as wet — Debris is being recirculated because it cannot leave, which links this fault to a cleaning complaint.
- No pump noise at all at the drain step — Either the pump is jammed or it is not being asked to run, and those are different branches.
- Dirty water backing up from the sink when the machine drains — The waste connection is the restriction, and the machine is blameless.
- Water standing in the base at the end of the cycle — The drain step did not complete, which is why the machine has stopped rather than continuing.

- Drain pump worn or seized — Below the blockages, because a healthy pump defeated by a shard sounds exactly like a failed one.
- Label, seed or shard jamming the drain impeller — Second, and found in the same look as the first: anything small enough to pass the filter seat ends up there.

Check in this order, and why
- Remove the filter and clear the sump by hand — It is the designed access point and the place the blockage almost always is.
- Bail the water out with a jug and a sponge first — Nothing else can be inspected until the base is empty, and it takes a few minutes with a shallow container.
- Listen at the drain step for whether the pump runs — Running-and-not-shifting and not-running-at-all are two different branches, and one sound separates them.
- Confirm the hose is high-looped before it reaches the waste — Without that loop the machine can take water back, which looks exactly like a pump that will not empty.
