What is actually happening
Before any part is suspected on a BRDWSH machine that will not clean, take the filter out and turn both arms by hand. Those two checks take five minutes and resolve most of these complaints.
Symptoms on this family
- A gritty film on everything after a cycle — Debris is being recirculated, which points at the filter rather than at the detergent.
- NEAR MISS - baked-on residue that no machine would remove — Some soils need a soak first. A machine that cleans everything else is not the fault here.
- Cleaning got worse gradually over months — Silting: filters, arms and the sump narrow slowly, and nothing announces itself on any particular day.
- The same rack position always comes out dirty — A repeatable dead spot is a coverage fault, and it is the most diagnosable version of this complaint.
- Detergent left undissolved in the dispenser — The dispenser was blocked by a tall item, or the water is not arriving hot enough to dissolve it.
The ranking that applies to this platform
- Water hardness settings or salt not maintained — Scale narrows jets and dulls glass, and on a machine with a softener the setting matters as much as the product.
- Detergent unsuitable or badly dosed — Cheap to test and commonly the whole answer, particularly after a change of product or a move to a harder water area.
- Upper arm fouled by a tall item — Ranks high because it is a loading habit rather than a fault, and because it takes out a whole rack at once.
- Wash pump worn — Last, because every cause above produces the same dirty dishes for far less money and because it needs the machine out to confirm.
Check in this order, and why
- Check the salt and rinse-aid levels if the machine uses them — Low on both produces exactly the marks people blame on the wash itself.
- Check the detergent is dissolving and the dispenser flap opens — An unopened flap or undissolved tablet explains a whole bad load and is visible at the end of the cycle.
- Feel whether the door is warm at the end of the cycle — A machine that never gets warm is a heating fault, and that is a different page from a coverage fault.
- Run a hot cycle with the machine empty and a cleaning product — Clears silting from the sump and the arms, and a machine that improves afterwards has told you the cause.
What to do before you start
Safety
Kill the power and close the supply valve before any fitting is touched. The inlet side is under mains pressure whenever the valve is open, whether the machine is running or not.
