What is actually happening

What you observe
- The panel lights but the cycle never begins — The machine has power and is waiting for a condition rather than failing to run.
- NEAR MISS - the cycle starts and stops within a minute — That is a stalled cycle rather than a no-start, and it is a different diagnosis.
- The door will not latch firmly — A door that rests closed but does not catch keeps the latch from confirming, and nothing starts until it does.
- NEAR MISS - no start after a power cut — Controls can hang after an interruption. Switch off at the spur for a minute before diagnosing anything.
- A padlock or key symbol on the display — Child lock is engaged, and it stops every input until it is cleared.
Likeliest causes first
- No supply at the spur or socket — Second and free to test. In a fitted kitchen the switched spur is often hidden in the adjoining cupboard.
- Child lock or delay start engaged — Ranks high because it produces an apparently dead machine with nothing wrong, and it is easy to set by accident.
- Programme selected but never started — Common on panels where selection and start are separate presses, especially after a power interruption.
- Water not arriving so the first gate never passes — The isolating valve under the sink gets closed during plumbing work and is rarely reopened deliberately.

- Push the door firmly until the latch catches — The latch is the first gate the machine checks, and a soft close is the commonest cause of all.
- Listen for the latch click with the door held closed — A latch that never clicks on a properly closed door has earned suspicion; one that clicks moves the diagnosis downstream.
- Find and test the switched spur or socket — In a fitted kitchen it is usually in the next cupboard, and it is the single most overlooked cause of a dead machine.
- Switch off at the spur for a minute and try again — Clears a control that hung after a power interruption, and a machine that then runs has told you the fault was transient.
