Water under a CRD refrigerator is a routing problem before it is a leak. Something that is meant to carry water to the pan is blocked, misaligned or frozen, and the water leaves by the next easiest path. On this family the defrost drain and the fill line share the same rear channel, so which one it is decides everything that follows.
What this looks like from the kitchen
- Water under the crisper drawers, on top of the liner floor — The drawers sit in a shallow tray of water and the salad greens spoil early because the humidity never drops.
- NEAR MISS - water dripping down the outside of the door — That is condensation on a cold surface in a humid kitchen, not a leak. Check the seal and the room rather than the drain.
- A sheet of ice growing across the freezer floor — Each defrost adds a layer because the water cannot leave, so the ice arrives before the puddle does.
- NEAR MISS - an oily film in the water — Oil means the sealed system is open. Stop, unplug the cabinet and call a technician; this is no longer a drain question.
- A musty smell from the base of the cabinet with no visible water — The pan is overflowing slowly into the insulation, and the smell arrives long before the puddle does.
Likeliest causes first
- Defrost drain blocked or frozen at the port — Ranked first on this family: the drain port sits at the back of the freezer floor and ices closed before it clogs, so the failure builds quietly over weeks with no warning.
- Drain trough misaligned after a shelf or panel refit — Ranks high wherever a previous repair went in. The trough is a friction fit on these cabinets and it does not click, so a panel put back a finger-width out sends the water past the port entirely.
- Fill valve failing to close fully — Rare here and easy to confirm: the water arrives on a fill schedule rather than a defrost schedule, and the ice maker makes hollow or oversized cubes at the same time.
- Evaporator drain heater open circuit — Last, because it is the only cause on this list that needs a meter to confirm, and because it presents exactly like a blocked drain until the drain has already been cleared once.
Working the fault in order
- Feel the floor of the machine compartment for damp insulation — Dry insulation with a wet floor points forward to the drain; wet insulation points at the pan.
- Pull the cabinet out far enough to see the base pan — Do this second because it takes two people, but it settles the pan, the fitting and the shut-off in one look.
- Check the drain trough alignment under the rear panel — Only after the drain port has been cleared: if water still misses the trough, the trough is the fault rather than the ice.
- Dry the floor completely and lay paper towel in three places — The one that wets first tells you the direction the water travels, which is the only way to work backwards to a source under a full cabinet.
