What is actually happening
On the ASPEN models the ice maker depends on the freezer compartment doing its job first. If the freezer has drifted even slightly warm the harvest never triggers, so an ice complaint on this family is worth treating as a temperature question until the temperature has been ruled out.
What this looks like from the kitchen
- Cubes are small, hollow or misshapen — A partial fill - restricted supply, a clogged filter or a valve that closes early - rather than a failed module.
- NEAR MISS - production slowed in the first days after installation — A new cabinet takes time to reach temperature and purge the line. Give it a day or two before diagnosing.
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — Nothing is arriving. That is a supply-side story: shut-off, line, valve or a frozen fill tube.
- A plug of ice in the fill tube — Very often the whole fault on this family, and it is visible once the bin is out of the way.
- Ice in the bin has welded into one block — Cubes are melting and refreezing, which points at a freezer that is cycling warm rather than at production.
Likeliest causes first
- Ice-maker module or control failed — Last, because everything above produces the same complaint for less money, and because a module swap on a guess is the classic wasted part on this appliance.
- Water filter clogged or not seated after a change — Ranks high because filter changes are the commonest recent event on any cabinet that suddenly stops making ice.
- Fill tube frozen at the mouth — First on this family because of where the tube runs: it passes through the coldest part of the channel, so a slow fill leaves a bead that grows into a plug.
- Supply shut-off partly closed or the line kinked behind the cabinet — Usually dates from a move or a floor clean. It produces small cubes before it produces none at all.
Working the fault in order
- Lift and release the bin arm or clear the sensor path — Free, instant, and it rules out the cause that makes a perfectly healthy maker sit idle.
- Trace the supply line behind the cabinet for a kink or a part-closed valve — Needs the cabinet pulled forward, which is why it sits below the checks that do not.
- Compare cube size over a day — Small cubes that stay small mean a restricted fill, which sends the diagnosis to the supply side rather than to the module.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer and read it after a few hours — A compartment that is not cold enough will never harvest, and this is the check that saves opening the mechanism for nothing.
Safety first
Safety
Disconnect the plug and let the cabinet sit before you start. Warm parts inside the machine compartment stay hot long after the compressor stops, and the drier and discharge line are the two that burn.

When this becomes a service call
Call when the control board is implicated. Boards are expensive, they are diagnosed by elimination rather than by inspection, and swapping one on a guess is the most common way owners spend more than the repair was worth.
