Bosch/Gaggenau Dishwasher F4: Drain Cycle Timeout — Residual Water Detected
F4 is the F-series counterpart to Bosch's E24 drain timeout code. Found on Gaggenau 400 Series and select Bosch Benchmark models, F4 means the drain pump operated for its full runtime (typically 3-5 minutes on F-series boards, slightly longer than E-series) but the water level sensor still detects water in the sump. The cycle halts to prevent overfilling on the next fill phase.
F4 vs E24: Code Family Differences
The underlying fault is identical — inadequate drainage. However, F-series boards (found in Gaggenau and some Benchmark units) handle drain monitoring slightly differently:
- E24 boards: Monitor drain pump current AND water level. E24 triggers if either detects a problem
- F4 boards: Primarily monitor water level only. The pump can run normally (good current draw) but if water remains, F4 triggers. This means F4 is more specifically a "water still present" code rather than a "pump not working" code
Practically, this means F4 is more likely to be caused by a downstream blockage (hose, disposal, air gap) than by pump failure itself, compared to E24 which catches pump motor failures more readily.

Gaggenau Installation Factors
Gaggenau dishwashers are frequently installed in high-end custom kitchens with non-standard plumbing configurations:
Extended drain runs: Custom kitchens sometimes place the dishwasher far from the sink drain point, requiring longer drain hose runs. BSH specifications limit drain hose length to 10 feet maximum and drain height to 40 inches maximum. Exceeding either creates backpressure the drain pump cannot overcome.
Under-island installations: Gaggenau panel-ready models often install in kitchen islands. Island drain connections require different plumbing — typically a branch line to a dedicated drain stack rather than connection to the sink disposal. If the branch line has inadequate slope or a partial blockage, F4 results.
Air gap device placement: Premium kitchen designs sometimes conceal the air gap device inside the countertop or cabinet, making it difficult to inspect and clean. A clogged air gap restricts drain flow — check this device first on any Gaggenau F4.
Diagnosis Procedure for F4
Quick Checks (5 minutes)
- Air gap or high-loop: Verify the air gap device is clean (remove the cap, clean the chamber) or that the drain hose has a proper high-loop clamped to the underside of the counter
- Disposal knockout: If draining to a disposal, confirm the knockout plug was removed during installation
- Disposal capacity: Run the disposal to clear food waste before the next dishwasher cycle
Hose Inspection (10 minutes)
- Pull the machine forward enough to access the drain hose routing
- Check for kinks at bend points — especially where the hose transitions from horizontal to vertical
- Measure the total hose run — if over 10 feet, this may be the root cause
- Check the hose end at the connection point — food debris and grease accumulate at the termination, narrowing the opening
Pump Assessment (15 minutes)
- Power off at breaker
- Remove kick plate
- With the sump containing water (after a failed drain cycle), listen during a drain attempt:
- Humming = pump energized but not spinning (seized impeller)
- Buzzing then silence = pump drawing excessive current and board cutting power (shorted winding)
- Normal drain sound but water remains = blockage downstream of pump
- Silence = no power reaching pump (board relay failure) or open motor winding
Drain Pump Impeller Direct Access
If the pump sounds like it is running but water is not moving:
- Remove the lower spray arm and triple-filter assembly from inside the tub
- Look into the sump — the drain pump impeller may be accessible depending on model
- Check for debris wrapped around the impeller shaft (threads, hair, rubber bands)

Parts and Pricing
| Part | BSH Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Drain pump assembly | 00620774 | $65-$95 |
| Drain hose | 00298564 | $20-$35 |
| Air gap cleaning (DIY) | N/A | $0 |
Professional repair: $175-$425. Gaggenau under-island installations may require additional time for machine access — custom panels and tight island cabinets add 15-30 minutes. Standard diagnosis runs 30-60 minutes.
Preventing F4
The same prevention applies as E24: scrape plates, run the disposal before starting the dishwasher, do not use regular dish soap, and clean the air gap device quarterly. For Gaggenau installations with extended drain runs, have a plumber verify the drain line slope during installation — inadequate slope causes chronic F4 that no amount of pump service will fix.
