The short answer
On the WFTV family a no-start splits immediately into a dead panel and a lit panel that refuses. Those are different faults and the brand-generic article does not separate them.
What you observe
- Panel lights but nothing happens on start — The control has power and is refusing, which usually means the lock is not confirming.
- The door will not lock, or unlocks straight away — Names the lock directly and explains everything downstream of it.
- It starts and then stops within a minute — A fill or lock fault rather than a start fault, though it looks the same from the front.
- The panel responds but the programme never begins — The control is alive and refusing, which is the lock or an active child lock.
- NEAR MISS - it runs but leaves water in the drum — That is a drainage fault and belongs on the drainage page.
Causes, most likely first on WFTV
- No power at the appliance — Ranked first on the WFTV family: a standard US household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V, and a socket behind a machine that vibrates works loose over the years. That is a family-level property rather than a model-level one, which is why it leads here. This moves above door lock not confirming closed, which leads the brand-generic order, because this family is a single build with fixed access points.
- Door lock not confirming closed — Second: the lock is worked at every cycle and has to report closed before anything else happens, so it heads the list whenever the panel is lit and the drum is still.
- Water supply closed so the cycle cannot begin — Third: a machine that cannot fill gives up within a minute, and from the outside that is indistinguishable from a refusal to start.
- Child lock, delay start or a programme not confirmed — Fourth: free to rule out, and a lock or delay left set produces a machine that looks completely dead from the front.
- Control board or the selector — Last: last, because the lock and the supply between them account for nearly every no-start that reaches a technician on this family.
Check in this order, and why
- Confirm whether the panel lights at all — One observation splits the fault into supply or control-side.
- Cut power at the breaker for a minute and retry — It clears a latched control state and takes nothing apart.
- Check both taps are open before blaming the control — A machine that cannot fill abandons the cycle in a way that reads as a refusal to start.
- Rule out child lock and delay start — Hold the lock button for a few seconds and cancel any delay, then retry.
Before you open anything
Safety
Isolate at the breaker and shut both taps before anything is disturbed, and expect water behind the filter hatch: put a tray down before opening it.
When to call a technician
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Breaker, socket, door and panel modes are owner checks. Call when the supply is proven and the door locks but nothing runs.
