The short answer
When the WM family will not start, prove the supply, then the door lock, then the taps. Most machines that reach a technician for this had a lock or a supply fault and a healthy board.
What you observe
- The door will not lock, or unlocks straight away — Names the lock directly and explains everything downstream of it.
- It starts, fills a little and stops — A fill fault rather than a start fault, though it presents the same way.
- No lights at all on the panel — A supply question: breaker, socket or the cord, before anything inside the machine.
- Panel lights but nothing happens on start — The control has power and is refusing, which usually means the lock is not confirming.
- NEAR MISS - it runs but leaves water in the drum — That is a drainage fault and belongs on the drainage page.
Causes, most likely first on WM
- Child lock, delay start or a programme not confirmed — Ranked first on the WM family: free to rule out, and a lock or delay left set produces a machine that looks completely dead from the front. The table above is one platform, so a weakness in the drain path appears on every code in it. This moves above door lock not confirming closed, which leads the brand-generic order, because the family spans several sizes on one platform and it is the shared parts that wear.
- No power at the appliance — Second: a standard US household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V, and a laundry socket behind a machine works loose more often than the breaker trips.
- Door lock not confirming closed — Third: the lock is worked at every cycle and has to report closed before anything else happens, so it heads the list whenever the panel is lit and the drum is still.
- Control board or the selector — Fourth: last, because the lock and the supply between them account for nearly every no-start that reaches a technician on this family.
- Water supply closed so the cycle cannot begin — Last: a machine that cannot fill will abandon the cycle almost immediately, which the owner reads as a refusal to start.
Check in this order, and why
- Confirm whether the panel lights at all — One observation splits the fault into supply or control-side.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the lock — A clear click that is now absent names the lock without any tools.
- Check both taps are open before blaming the control — A machine that cannot fill abandons the cycle in a way that reads as a refusal to start.
- Rule out child lock and delay start — Hold the lock button for a few seconds and cancel any delay, then retry.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A locked door with water behind it is released by draining through the filter hatch, which is exactly what that hatch is for. Shut both taps before touching any hose.
When to call a technician
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Breaker, socket, door and panel modes are owner checks. Call when the supply is proven and the door locks but nothing runs.
