The short answer
A BH dishwasher that will not start is usually being held rather than broken. The door latch, the supply at the socket and a cycle that has not actually been confirmed account for most of these calls, and none of them needs a tool.
What you observe
- It hums briefly and stops — Something is trying and not completing. A locked pump gives exactly this.
- The panel lights but the cycle never begins — Power is present and the machine is refusing. The door latch and the water supply are the first two suspects.
- It trips the breaker as soon as it is switched on — A short rather than a start fault, and the one symptom here that means stopping immediately.
- No lights, no sound, nothing at all — A supply fault rather than a machine fault. Nothing inside is worth suspecting until power is proven.
Causes, most likely first
- The door latch or its switch — First on this family. The machine will not run without proof the door is shut, and a latch that has drifted out of alignment, or a rack pushed proud so the door does not pull fully home, gives a machine that appears dead while having full power.
- The outlet, the plug or the circuit feeding it — Second. A standard US household branch circuit is fifteen or twenty amps at one hundred and twenty volts, and a dishwasher sharing one with a disposer or a kettle can trip it without any fault in the machine.
- A delay start or a control that is paused — It is not a fault at all, and it accounts for a real share of calls. A machine counting down looks exactly like one refusing.
- A control lock engaged — Where the model has one, a lock left on ignores every press. It is checked in seconds and it is free.
Check in this order
- Check the breaker and what else shares that circuit — A machine that trips is not a start fault, and a shared circuit explains a machine that works sometimes.
- Test the socket - on a built-in machine it is usually in the next cabinet — Second, and it is the check most often skipped because the socket is out of sight.
- Note whether the panel lights at all — A dead panel and a lit one are two different halves of this list, and nothing separates them more cheaply.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A built-in machine is often fed from a socket inside an adjacent cabinet - find and isolate that socket before working, rather than assuming the machine is dead because it is silent.

When to call
Call when the socket is proven good, the door latches square, the tap is open, no delay or lock is set and the machine still will not start. At that point the fault is the door switch, the board or the wiring, and all three are behind a panel.
