The short answer

What you observe
- Nothing audible at the drain step at all — Points past the filter at the pump or its supply, which is the other half of this list.
- Food debris redeposited on the load — The machine is washing with water it should have got rid of, which is what a partly blocked drain produces.
- The pump can be heard running with nothing leaving — A blockage rather than an electrical fault. The pump has power and is working against something.
- A stale smell from the base — Standing water and trapped debris. It arrives with a slow drain rather than a sudden failure.
Causes, most likely first
- A filter and sump packed with debris — First on this family and it is not close. Everything the load lets go ends here, the filter is designed to be opened by hand, and a machine that has never had it cleaned will eventually stop draining whatever else is healthy.
- A kinked or crushed drain hose — Second. The hose runs in a tight space behind or beside the machine, and pushing the unit home folds it.
- A check valve held open or stuck shut — The small non-return in the drain path either lets water back or refuses to let it out. It is rarer than everything above and it sits deeper in the machine.
- A failed drain pump or its supply — Last. Silence at the drain step rather than a straining pump is what actually points here, and it is behind the base panel either way.

- Pull the machine forward and follow the drain hose end to end — Look for a fold behind the cabinet and a crush point where the unit was pushed home.
- Isolate the machine, bail the base and take the filter out — The leading cause on this family.
- Start a drain and listen for the pump — Straining against a blockage and doing nothing at all are two different halves of this list, and this split is free.

Call when the filter and sump are clean, the hose is clear and properly routed, the waste connection runs freely and the machine still holds water. At that point the fault is the pump, its supply or the check valve, and all of them are behind the base panel.
