The short answer
A Black+Decker compact dryer that will not start is usually being refused by a full tank, a door that is not latching, or an outlet that is not delivering. All three are checked in a minute with no tools. A door switch, thermal fuse or control fault comes last, and the fuse case usually has a history of poor drying behind it.
What you observe
- Nothing at all when start is pressed — No light, no click, no drum movement.
- A warning light or tone instead of a start — The machine is refusing rather than failing.
- The panel lights but the drum does not move — Power is present and something downstream is stopping it.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and stops part-way — That is a cycle fault and belongs on its own page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A full condensate tank — First on a ventless machine and often missed entirely: the machine will not begin a cycle it cannot complete, so it refuses with the tank full.
- The door not latching — Second: a light door and a small catch mean a soft close leaves the switch open while the door looks shut. Lint packed into the catch does the same.
- No power at the outlet — Third. Compact dryers get plugged into shared outlets and extension leads in small apartments, and a light lead drops enough voltage to leave the machine clicking.
- A thermal fuse, door switch or control fault — Last. A machine that dried worse and worse and then died completely is the thermal fuse pattern, and that means the airflow path must be cleared as part of the repair.
Check in this order, and why
- Empty the tank and re-seat it — On a ventless machine this is the first thing to rule out.
- Open and close the door firmly and press start — Listen for the latch click as the door seats.
- Test the outlet with another appliance — It settles the completely dead case immediately.
- Ask how it behaved before it died — Weeks of poor drying then nothing points at a thermal fuse.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer before touching the latch, the drum or any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bypass a thermal fuse: it opened because the machine overheated, and defeating it removes the protection that stopped a fire. Never wedge the door switch closed, and do not run a compact dryer in a sealed closet.
When to call a technician
Call when the tank is empty, the door latches cleanly, the outlet is proven live, the drum turns freely, and the machine is still dead. Tell the technician if drying had been getting worse beforehand, because that points straight at a thermal fuse and means the airflow path needs clearing too. Ask the part price before agreeing on a compact machine.
