The short answer
A Black+Decker compact dryer that tumbles warm without drying has usually lost its ability to remove water rather than its ability to heat: a full tank, a lint-blocked condenser or a clogged filter. All three are owner maintenance. On vented models, a crushed hose does the same thing, and a failed element is last in both cases.
What you observe
- Clothes come out warm and still damp — Heat present, moisture removal absent.
- The tank is full or its warning is showing — The machine has nowhere to put the water.
- Cycles run far longer than they used to — A gradual restriction, which is how lint always behaves.
- NEAR MISS — the air is cold from the first minute — No heat at all points at the element or a thermal cut-out.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A full tank or a blocked drain hose — First on a ventless machine: without anywhere for the condensed water to go, the machine cannot dry no matter how well it heats.
- A lint-blocked condenser — Second. The condenser is a finned block behind a door at the base, and lint mats across its face until airflow through it collapses.
- A clogged filter or filter housing — Third: the main filter is cleaned and the housing beneath it is forgotten, and on a compact machine that housing fills quickly.
- A crushed vent hose, or a failed element or cut-out — Last. On vented models a pinched hose produces the same symptom, and in both cases a thermal cut-out usually opens because airflow was already poor.
Check in this order, and why
- Empty the tank first — It is the fastest check and a very common single cause.
- Open the base door and look at the condenser face — A grey lint mat across the fins is visible immediately.
- Clean the filter and look into its housing — The housing holds far more than the filter does.
- On vented models, check the hose run — A crushed section is visible at a glance.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer before removing the condenser, the lint housing or any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never run a vented machine with the hose off and pointed into the room, and never run a ventless machine with the condenser removed. Do not run a compact dryer in a sealed closet without ventilation.
When to call a technician
Call when the tank is empty, the filter and condenser are clean, the hose is clear on a vented model, and clothes still come out damp. That points at the element or a thermal cut-out. On a compact machine ask the part price first, because it can approach what the appliance is worth. A scorched smell means stop using it now.
