The short answer
A Black+Decker compact dryer that stops part-way through a cycle is very often reporting a full condensate tank or an overheated cabinet, not failing. Empty the tank and clean the filters first. Overloading and a blocked airflow path come next, and a thermostat or control fault is last.

- It stops early with a warning light or tone — Most often a full tank on a ventless machine.
- It stops early and the cabinet is very hot — A thermal protection responding to restricted airflow.

Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A full condensate tank — First on a ventless compact machine, and the design working as intended: with nowhere to put the water it removes, the machine stops and waits for you.
- A restricted filter or condenser — Second: lint on the filter and matted across the condenser fins cuts the airflow, the cabinet heats, and a protection ends the cycle early.
- Overloading the small drum — Third, and endemic on compact machines: a packed drum cannot tumble, moisture cannot leave the fabric, and a sensing cycle either extends forever or gives up.
- A thermostat, sensor or control fault — Last, and the only group needing a meter. Everything above is maintenance rather than repair.

Unplug the dryer before removing the condenser or any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not run a ventless machine with its condenser removed or its door open: the airflow path is part of the design. Never run a compact dryer in a sealed closet with no ventilation, and never block the air inlet to reduce noise.
When to call a technician
Call when the tank is empty and seated, the filter and condenser are clean, the load is reasonable, the machine has room to breathe, and it still stops early. From there the suspects are the level sensor, the thermostats and the control. A cabinet too hot to touch with an early stop should be treated as urgent rather than repeated.
