The short answer for these models
A leaking refrigerator usually has a drainage problem rather than a plumbing one. Condensation and defrost melt are normal products of cooling; the fault is in where they end up. Find the path the water is meant to take and you will find the blockage in it. Where this departs from the brand-level page is the ranking. A glazed door leaks far more heat than a solid one by design, so the same fault reads as more severe on a glass-door unit and the baseline you are judging against has to change with it, so on a KS unit the door and glazing checks lead.
What you actually see
- Which form your KS unit is — settle this first — See whether you are judging a glass door against a solid-door expectation. If you are, half the symptom list is not a symptom.
- Water collecting under the crisper or in the base of the cabinet — That is the classic blocked drain: melt water backing up at the lowest point inside rather than running away.
- A puddle at the back or under the middle — Rear water is nearer its source than front water, which makes it the easier of the two to trace.
- NEAR MISS — the water is clean, cold and only appears near the ice compartment — That is an ice or fill-path fault rather than a drainage one, and the ice page covers it properly.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- The cabinet is not level, or the drain channel is not sloping — Common, invisible until you look, and corrected with a wrench at the front feet. On a KS unit this rises to the top of the order, because the identification step above changes what it proves — so the door and glazing checks answer more in five minutes than the rest of the list answers in an hour.
- The supply line, the fill valve or an internal joint — It comes last because it is the least likely and because a real supply leak is usually obvious the moment you look behind the cabinet.
The order the checks belong in
- First — find the drain hole and test it — Find the hole at the lowest point inside and pour a little warm water into it. Water that stands there rather than vanishing has answered the question. On these models this is the step the construction changes: read the result against the form you identified first, because the same finding means different things on the two.
- Second — shut the door on a strip of paper — Run a paper strip round the whole door. Warm humid air is the raw material of every drop you are mopping up.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water and electricity share this cabinet: dry the floor before you kneel and never work on a live machine while standing in a puddle. Nothing rigid goes into a drain hole, because the tubing at the far end of it punctures easily.
Where the owner job ends
Call once the drain, the seal, the tray and the levelling are all accounted for, or the moment you find water coming from a supply line rather than from melt. Call immediately if water is reaching an electrical connection or a neighbouring appliance: at that point the leak stops being a nuisance and becomes a hazard.
