In short
Burning smells, scorched plugs, tripping breakers and shocks come from the supply connection, from water reaching wiring, or from a motor or heater breaking down under load. None of them improves with another cycle. Value-line construction shows in switches, seals and fit rather than in anything exotic, and that is where these faults concentrate. Nearly all of this is free to check and needs no tool at all.
What you actually see
- A smell of hot rubber during the spin — A belt slipping on a seized part rather than an electrical fault, though it presents identically.
- A hot or burning smell, especially during the spin — Friction or a failing motor circuit under the heaviest load of the cycle.
- The breaker trips at the same point in every cycle — A circuit that is only energised at that point, which identifies itself.
- NEAR MISS: a burning smell only from newly washed clothes — That is usually detergent or fabric rather than the machine.
The causes in order of likelihood
- Loose or overheated supply connection — The one to suspect first. It leads because loosened connections make heat under load, and a washer loads its supply harder than almost anything else in the house. A washer draws hard while heating and again at spin, and a connection that has loosened makes heat at exactly those moments.
- Motor or motor-control failure — The second suspect. A motor breaking down under load trips protection during spin, which is why the fault so often appears at the same point in the cycle.
- Water reaching wiring or a connection block — Third, and less common. A leaking hose, pump seal or tub seal drips onto wiring beneath the machine.
- Mechanical drag producing a burning smell — Fourth, and less common again. A seized bearing or a slipping belt smells exactly like an electrical fault and is not one, though it is just as much a reason to stop.

The diagnostic order
- Switch off the circuit at the breaker — Everything else here is done on a dead machine.
- Inspect the plug, socket and cable for heat damage — Discolouration and a hot-plastic smell both point at the same place.
- Note the point in the cycle at which the fault occurs — Fill, heat, wash or spin: each convicts a different circuit.
- Body: The order below is done with the machine isolated. There is no owner-side live test in this category.
What you can do now
- Isolate at the breaker and leave the machine unused — Do not run a cycle to reproduce the symptom.
- Photograph any scorching before touching anything — It is the evidence that tells a technician where to start.

- Write down when in the cycle it happens and what it smells like — Rubber, hot plastic and burnt insulation are three different answers.
- STOP. Do not open the casing or test anything live — A washer casing holds a heavy drum and live connections, and neither is an owner task.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If anyone has felt a shock from the machine, leave the circuit off and do not use it again until it has been checked.
