Washer complaints group into a handful of classes: it will not start, it will not drain or spin, it leaks, it is noisy, or it shows an electrical warning sign. Each has a page beneath this one. What you observe, and where it is covered
- Nothing happens when you press start — A door-lock, supply or water condition. See the page on a machine that will not start.
- Burning smell, a tripping breaker or a shock — An electrical warning sign. Isolate the circuit and see the electrical-safety page.
- Water left in the drum at the end — Drain, pump filter or hose.
- The drum will not spin or the load comes out soaked — Balance, drain or motor control.
- Water on the floor — Door seal, hose fitting or overfill.
The causes in order of likelihood
- Drain and pump-filter faults — First, and first for a reason. Drain and filter faults lead because the pump filter collects everything the drum does not, and few owners clear it. Blocked filters, coins and debris in the pump, and drain hoses routed too high or too low.
- Start and door-lock faults — Second. Locks that hold without confirming, trapped laundry, control locks and supply problems.
- Spin and balance faults — Third. Unbalanced loads, levelling and transit bolts. Frequently not a fault at all.
- Noise and vibration — Fourth. Levelling, floor structure and bearings, in that order of likelihood.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bypass the door lock to open a machine mid-cycle, and never move a machine with water still in the drum.
When this becomes a service call
Electrical warning signs are a service call from the moment they appear. Filters, hoses, levelling, load balance and lock settings are owner work and account for most of the rest. Say whether the machine refuses to start or stops partway: they are different faults.
