The short answer
Water from a Bertazzoni freezer column is defrost meltwater that has left its drain path, and on a freezer the drain freezes far more often than it clogs. Ice on the compartment floor at the back is the giveaway. Because the water ends up inside joinery, this is worth acting on sooner than the same fault on a freestanding cabinet.
What you observe
- A sheet of ice across the compartment floor at the back — Meltwater freezing where it should be draining away.
- Water running out at the door when you open it — The ice sheet has melted at the front and found the seal.
- Damp, staining or a swollen plinth beside the column — Water has been reaching the joinery for some time.
- NEAR MISS — water with softening food — Then the column has a cooling fault and the water is its evidence.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A frozen defrost drain — First on a freezer: the drain sits in a compartment below freezing almost continuously, so any water that lingers there freezes and the block grows with each cycle.
- Debris in the drain channel — Second. Packaging film and food fragments give the ice something to build on, which is why a drain that has blocked once tends to block again.
- A displaced tray or drain hose behind the plinth — Third, and common after installation: both are reached only from the front of the joinery, and both are easily knocked while the column is pushed home.
- A door seal that is not holding — Fourth, always contributing: a poor seal admits humid air, which makes more frost, more meltwater and a heavier load on a drain that is already marginal.
Check in this order, and why
- Look for ice on the compartment floor at the back — It is the clearest evidence of a frozen or blocked drain.
- Check the joinery beside and beneath the column — Damp there changes the urgency of everything else.
- Defrost fully, then flush the drain and watch it run — A frozen drain cannot be cleared while the column is cold.
- Check the tray and hose behind the plinth last — They explain water under the cabinet rather than inside it.
What an owner can safely check
- Move the food to another freezer or a cooler — A freezer holds food safely at zero Fahrenheit, minus eighteen Celsius, or below.
Tools: cooler, iceAbout 30 min
- Defrost the column completely with the door open — Let the ice sheet and the drain thaw together; never chip at either.
Tools: towelsAbout 90 min
- Flush the drain with warm water and a soft wire — Work gently and confirm the water runs right through.
Tools: warm water, soft wireAbout 25 min
- Check the tray and hose behind the plinth grille — The hose should discharge over the tray and the tray sit square.
Tools: torchAbout 25 min
- Dry the cabinet base and check for swelling — Damp joinery holds water long after the leak is cured.

Safety
Switch the column off at its breaker before flushing the drain or working behind the plinth — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and you will otherwise handle water beside a live appliance inside joinery. Never push a sharp probe into the drain: evaporator tubing runs behind it. Do not draw a built-in column out of its opening alone.
When to call a technician
Call when the column has been defrosted, the drain runs clear, the tray and hose are seated, the gasket seals, and water returns anyway — and call sooner if joinery beside the column is already damp. A drain that refreezes within days points at the defrost system rather than debris, and that means panels off. Oily fluid rather than clear water means the sealed system and the column should be switched off.

This page covers Bertazzoni built-in freezer columns as a class rather than one model. A family- or model-specific page carries what is deliberately missing here: drain, hose and tray part identifiers, niche dimensions, gasket profiles and defrost timings.
