Before you open anything
Safety
Switch the column off at its breaker before removing the grille or any interior panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off an evaporator. Do not attempt to draw a built-in column out of its opening alone: it is tall, heavy, front-loaded by its door and it will tip toward you. Leave panel and fixing work at the level of tightening what is already there.
When to call a technician
Call when the panels and grille are tight, the ventilation is clear, the column is firm in its opening, and the noise remains — and call promptly for a click every few minutes with silence after it. A tick that returns within days of a defrost means the defrost system is not clearing the coil, which is meter work behind the interior panel and not an owner repair.
