The short answer

What an owner actually sees
- Press Start and the oven beeps or blinks but does nothing — A deliberate refusal. Look for a control lock, a delayed start, or a door lock that has not released.
- A lock indicator is showing and the door will not open — The self-clean latch has not released. Let the oven cool fully before anything else.
- The oven starts normally and stops partway through — An abort rather than a refusal. This points at the sensor, a thermal protector or the control, and it is technician territory.
- NEAR MISS — the oven runs but does not heat — A cycle that runs its full length with no heat is a heating fault rather than a cycle fault, and it has a different and largely mechanical list.
What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Self-clean door latch not released — First on this family, and first by a clear margin among ovens that stop working right after a clean. The oven will not run any cycle while it believes the door is locked, and the latch will not release until the cavity is properly cool.

- Oven temperature sensor out of range — Third, and the leading cause of an oven that starts and then aborts. A sensor reading impossibly high or low makes the control stop the cycle as a protective measure.
- Thermal protector or cooling fan fault — Fourth. An oven that overheats its own control compartment will shut down partway through, and the usual reason is a cooling fan that has stopped or a vent that has been blocked by a trim kit or a nearby cabinet.
Check in this order, and why
- 1. Let the oven cool completely and check for a lock indicator — If the door is locked, nothing else on this list matters until it releases.
- 2. Cut power at the breaker for several minutes, then restore it — This clears a stuck control state and sometimes releases a latch.
